Crowd psychology is the study of how people work and cooperate as a group. Working as a group people influence each other and develop different views on politics, group thoughts and society. It is how many groups of people spread to get their message and influence the activities of the people around them.
Some of the motivations people to use is this form of psychology is go gian power over people. When people know how to motivate and influence other people you can control them and bend them to your ideologies. Think about politicians, they use this type of information to get their constituents to vote their way on an issue. Another aspect of crowd psychology is that people feel the adrenaline of the crowd and how immensely people can root for their home team. “Were ID was there EGO shall be” ( Sigmund Freud). For Example, the crowd at a sports game. The home team always has the advantage because the crowds energy influences the players. The study of power of the crowd and their influence is the essence of crowd psychology.
Music can influence emotions and create feeling in large amounts of people at the same time. It can create connections with the song and the other people who like the same song. In addition Music has the ability to bring people together to further help a cause, that is the reason for theme songs. Think about the feeling a crowd gets when the theme song from their favorite song comes on. People anticipate their favorite characters and the joy you get for watching the show.
The study of Crowd psychology can show the good in human group influences. Although this quote from Freud is specifically about religion, it applies to the influence of celebrities as well. “Devout believers are safeguarded in a high degree against the risk of certain neurotic illnesses; their acceptance of the universal neurosis spares them the task of constructing a personal one.”(The Future of an Illusion, 1927). As with religion, some people worship musicians. Anything they do becomes something to scrutinize and copy. The absolute “god status” of some musicians helps promote ideology that they care for. People can come together to help one another to better themselves based on the ideas of a musical talent. What does that say about society. That we are willing to change ourselves based on the lyrics of a song or the cause of a celebrity. On the other hand, it can also bring out the worst in people. On December 23rd, 1985 a teenager committed suicide and the parents blamed the band Judas Priest. The parents filed a lawsuit alleging that Belknap and Vance (the boys who killed themselves )were driven to their desperate acts by subliminal messages hidden in Judas Priest Stained Class album. The parents believed the music could make people act against their natural feeling and create chaos. The study of Crowd psychology shows that music can be an influence for both great good and can bring out worst of people.
People come together to help one another, whether it is to protest or to help others. Freud’s theory explains that people come together in times of need as well as to do what’s right. Antifa who are a protest group who try to fight for better equality among race. These people came together to try to make a difference in people’s lives. Their actions might make a change in how we view our lives and on how our society looks at social issues.
Music is a form of media that reaches a lot of people all over the world. Music is one of the things you identify with when you get older. By showing support people feel part of a community that brings people together. The sense of community brings people in a certain way. Being in a group also helps with people’s motivation. Going to concerts can help with people’s social life giving more things to do. In Freud’s theory it talks about rebelling against the lear. Music can be a lot about rebellion. The lyrics of a song can be against a government or a certain politician a group doesn’t like. The lesser emotions of a group or rebelion are pushed out due to them being more complexed.
Music can have different behaviors, some behavior scan be angry or happy. According to Wilfred Trotter, there are some human behaviors that get expressed at a crowd Defensive, Aggressive and Socialized. These emotions are expressed in a crowd.
Music it can make people come together or tear them apart. Live Aid is a example of people coming together to help a great cause. Everyone who was famous played at Wembley Stadium in 1985. 1.1 Billion people were watching on television being one of the biggest watched event in the world. This charity event gave 125 million dollars to an Ethiopian famine. Without that the country would of had no food and many people would starve to death. This is just one example of Sigmunds Freuds superego theory on crowd psychology. Our superego tells us that we need to do good in life as well as to help others. In this case the superego feed the musicians desires to help people. The crowd bought the music to confirm that belief that they were helping.
To provide further evidence of music feeding the superego. The song We are the World raised 44 million dollars to help the content of Africa. Many celebrities come together to create a song for the good of the people in Africa. Perhaps one of the most interesting phenomenon in the world of crowd psychology is the superego because the need to help people is a part of all cultures. People feel good about themselves when they help others and want to be apart of a good cause. To further illustrate, on December 3rd 1984, the song “Do you Know it’s Christmas” raised 10 million for another Ethiopian famine. Musical influence on giving is not just about the superego. A few other branches of psychology enter into the mix. Convergence theory shows that the product is coming from all the people together in one group with similar ideas. The Freudian Theory explains that it is our primary function to help one another. Music helps people notice the greater causes in life and it is very fulfilling to help one another.
This survey was asking questions about our particular topic. The survey was 43 participants. The data showed that out of 43 people 46.5 percent responded to the question “what would motivate them to purchase a ticket to a benefit concert by choosing the option that stated “They would go but they are not there only to promote a good cause”. People just seem to care about the artist that they are landing to and not what they are supporting. 16.3 percent would go to the concert to support the cause. People do care about helping others but the majority of people only want to see the artist. The people who go to events may want to support the charity but the artist matters more to people. The desire to see the celebrity belt out their favorite song is more compelling than whatever cause the celebrity is promoting.
For the other question out of 48 people 25.6% get an influence of an artist but don’t actually change who they are as a person. People want to be unique in their own way but take the best aspects of their ideal role models to create who they are. 16.3% of people who took the survey said that they are there own people and thet they do whatever they want without any outside influence. People try to stand out to be more individual. Its on how they dress, listen to, act and talk people try to go against the crowd to be themselves.
In the survey 34.9% of people take influence by a certain artist all the time. People want to fit in a crowd so they listen to the trendiest music, eat at the trendy restaurants and do everything that their friends want them to do. While there is nothing wrong with that people who want to be in a crowd, once someone an “influencer” it spreads mostly though social media as people jump on the bandwagon to be more popular.
Ultimately crowd psychology is critical for all of society to understand because it shows how people can come together to be something better than themselves. It is also about how individuals take certain aspects of their heroes and apply them to their own lives. Whether it’s a physical appearance or a mental attitude people want to improve on themselves to be a better person.
Most specifically this study is to show how people can get along to help other people in need. This also shows how people want to help with charity events but are not motivated to do anything unless there getting helped in return such as going to a concert and the money goes to a good cause. People want to help each other and want to build a better society, it is human nature but most people don’t want to help others without getting something in return. People just want to be rewarded but some will just help others for the kindness of their heart.
People help one another to feel better about themselves. Groups of people do these acts of kindness to help improve our understanding of the world around us. By doing this people are making their lives more meaningful to have a higher purpose to do something bigger than yourself. That is why a lot of people can come together to create something great
